The Sweepers Prayer

A colleague just shared this story with us. It was such an encouragement. I hope it reminds me to keep praying for everyone and not give up on the work God is doing.

In my home country I was among the very devout. I was a fervent Muslim and had the position of an imam.

One day – it was the feast of Ramadan – I went to the mosque. I was dressed in new clean clothes, ready to do my prayers. On my way I saw the Christian sweeper who used to clean our street.

I felt sorry for him because he had to work on a day like this where everyone else was celebrating, and I de- cided to give him some money.

The man thanked me and asked whether he could pray for me. This was a surprising request and I thought: “How does this Christian want to pray for me? It is nei- ther the right time nor the right place for prayer, and when we Muslims pray, we wash ourselves and wear clean clothes. And he wants to pray with dirty hands and dirty clothes in the middle of the road!”

But I wanted to make him happy and permitted him to pray for me.

And so he prayed, “Lord, thank you for this man, for this money and for this time. God, please show him the way, the truth and the life. Amen.”

I was surprised to hear this prayer, even though it confirmed my opinion that this poor man just didn’t know how to pray the right way.

Six years later God changed my life and caused me to find the way, the truth and the life in Jesus. At that time God reminded me of the sweeper: “Do you remember how six years ago one Christian man prayed for you? This is the answer to his prayer.”

This sweeper never knew that the imam for whom he had prayed would one day become a follower of Jesus. But his prayer had been answered.

And this is why I keep encouraging other people: Pray for Muslims! Don’t give up, even if you don’t see results. You don’t know what God will do.

Lord, stir Christians to follow in the example of this humble sweeper. Touch lives and draw people to Jesus.

Still have work to do!

Vision 2025

In 1999, our leaders realized that at the speed we were going, it would be at least 2150 before a Bible translation could be started for every language that needed one.

As they thought about the people perishing around the world every day without receiving the Good News of the gospel, they felt God calling them to adopt a new goal for accomplishing this mission.

Our leaders committed to do everything we could to see a Bible translation program in progress in every language still needing one by 2025.

Today, more than 1,600 languages still need a Bible translation started, and Wycliffe is working faster than ever to reach those languages as soon as possible. (From http://www.wycliffe.org)

We are making progress, even though the numbers don’t seem to be going down as fast as we like. This is also because we have added new Bible Translation needs over the years as we have learned more about the many languages in the world.

Thank you for standing with us as we continue to serve with Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Check out this Celebration!

JAARS, our partner in the Bible translation task, just had a celebration of one of the most recent Bibles being dedicated. Rejoice with us by clicking on this video link and selecting the 2022 Scripture Celebration at JAARS video.

You can’t help but smile and tear up as you see the joy in the faces of people holding God’s Words in their heart language!

Thank you for your part in making the reality of getting God’s precious Word into the hands and hearts of Bibleless people of the world! Because of you, our brothers and sisters in Christ all around the world are now blessed to have His Word in their mother tongue, the language that speaks to their hearts, just like we do.

Let’s celebrate together!

February Love

Ken and Anne, along with our staff, were able to serve our missionary residents with a delicious meal a few weeks ago. We interspersed the courses with a time to share stories of how God showed His love to us in special ways in the past. We sang songs of His love as well.

Everyone talked about how special the night was for each and everyone of them. I’m so grateful for a group of creative, hard-working staff who love serving each and every day.

Reaching Bible Translation Goals!

Please join us in praising God for these Scripture dedications that took place in December! Pray that the Scriptures will be used and result in transformed lives.

  • Lis Ma Ron New Testament, Nigeria, Dec. 11, 2021. Population: 160,000.
  • Lika New Testament, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dec. 15, 2021. Population: 80,000.
  • Migaama New Testament, Chad, Dec. 30, 2021. Population: 70,000.

Everyone of these languages are important to God because they are important to the people who use them and need to hear the Words of their Creator.

Your support enables us to support others who have served in this task for decades!

Watch this Video and Rejoice

Each Fall, Wycliffe Bible Translators and our partners set aside a day to celebrate the newly translated Bibles that have been dedicated the previous year. Watching the videos of the dedications always brings me to tears as I watch people receiving the very words of God in their Mother Tongue for the first time. They are dancing, shouting and crying as they receive their Bible. Do I do the same?

Because of your support, together we can dance with people from around the world who can understand “Immanuel, God with Us” for the first time this year! Click here to enjoy our partner JAARS video celebration.

You need this book!

Our colleague, Nate Gordon, has written his first book. Nate and Sheri Gordon arrived in Indonesia a few years after we did but stayed about 22 years, serving the people in the area of aviation and prayer. We spent time with them in a small group and even went on vacation together! We have always loved Nate’s newsletters and his style of writing and hoped he would one day write a book.

Well, it’s here! I’ve already bought a copy and am halfway through reading it. Nate’s stories of flying into the jungle interior and watching God transform people with a Bible in their own language keeps you on your seat. The chapters are short and you can read a few at a time.

If you are looking for a gift this Christmas, we highly recommend this book. You can order it from Amazon here.

Amazon Shopping Aids Bible Translation!

If you’re like me, you do a lot of shopping at Amazon.com. And why not? It’s convenient and fast and there are so many choices!

But did you know that if you start your order at smile.amazon.com, you can choose Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) to get a donation just because you ordered! So far, WBT has received over $36,000 from people choosing them as their non-profit of choice.

Thank you for considering this! $36,000 goes a long way to help a local translator, or print a Bible or train a consultant.
